Play4therapy

Play4therapy

Play your way through challenging behaviour.

Often when children and their parents or caregivers struggle with challenging behaviour our efforts are directed at behaviour management. However, it has been found that an effective approach is to focus on building attachment, self-esteem, trust in others, and joyful engagement.

In treatment, the play therapist guides the parent or carer and child through playful, fun games, developmentally challenging activities, and tender, nurturing activities. The very act of engaging each other in this way helps the adult regulate the child’s behaviour and communicate love, joy, and safety to the child. It helps the child feel secure, cared for, connected and worthy.

play4therapy, based on Theraplay principles, can be beneficial for children:

  • who are adopted or in foster care
  • who are re-engaging with a parent after a period of separation
  • struggling to regulate their emotions
  • finding it hard to engage or connect with their parents or caregivers.

play4therapy is available for families living in Kwinana and is held at Relationships Australia in Kwinana.
